Los Altos Police Safely Detain At-Risk Individual In Police Parking Lot
Los Altos, Calif. — April 12, 2023 — On Tuesday, April 11, at approximately 6:08 PM, officers were notified of a local missing at-risk individual in possession of a knife. Officers subsequently made contact with the individual and, at approximately 10 PM, it was determined that the individual was in the Police Department parking lot.
Los Altos Police officers, with mutual aid from the Mountain View Police Department crisis negotiation team, were able to de-escalate the situation and safely take the individual into custody at approximately 10:30 PM. The individual received treatment on scene for self-inflicted injuries and was subsequently transported to a local hospital.
While the encounter was taking place in the parking lot, the Los Altos City Council meeting—in progress at the time in the adjacent Council Chambers—was recessed and immediately put on lockdown out of extreme caution.
After the area was deemed safe, the Council meeting lockdown was lifted, and the meeting resumed. No members of the City Council, public, or staff were harmed during the course of the incident.
