Identity Theft Information
Identity theft involves acquiring key pieces of an individual's identifying information such as name, address, date of birth, Social Security Number and mother’s maiden name, in order to impersonate them.
This information enables the identity thief to commit numerous forms of fraud which include, but are not limited to, taking over the victim’s financial accounts, opening new bank accounts, purchasing automobiles, applying for loans, credit cards and Social Security benefits, renting apartments and establishing services with utility and phone companies.
Anyone can become a victim of identity theft. It is important to act fast once it is discovered that you or a loved one's identity has been compromised. Alert your credit bureau and your bank immediately, before you even file a police report, as an identity thief works quickly. Next, collect what information you can and contact the Police Department to file a report.
