Assembly Bill 413, known as the "Daylighting Law", amends Section 22500 of the California Vehicle Code to prohibit stopping, standing, or parking a vehicle within a specified distance of crosswalks.

Requirements

AB 413 requires drivers to maintain the following distances from crosswalks when parking:

  • Unmarked or marked crosswalks without a curb extension: 20 feet
  • Crosswalks with a curb extension: 15 feet

Enforcement

The law comes into effect on January 1, 2025. To prepare for implementation, the city of Los Altos is modifying curbs in high-traffic areas to clearly indicate where parking is prohibited. The City will focus on educating the public about the new law and will issue warnings for violations before being ticketed.

Compliance

The City encourages all residents and visitors to familiarize themselves with the new law and comply with its requirements. Please pay close attention to curb markings and signage to ensure proper parking and avoid citations. As a general rule, remember to leave a car-length distance between your vehicle and the start of the curb.

Purpose

The graphics below illustrate how AB 413 enhances pedestrian safety by improving visibility at crosswalks. By increasing the distance between parked vehicles and crosswalks, drivers and pedestrians have a clearer view of each other, reducing the risk of accidents.
