Los Altos Rolls Out Phased Reopening of Recreation Facilities
Los Altos, Calif. — May 24, 2021 — After a 14-month halt on in-person programming and events due to COVID-19, the Recreation and Community Services Department will start taking steps to reopen its doors to the community.
The detailed 'Phased Opening Plan', presented to the City Council in April, listed possible start dates for classes, camps, and facility reservations as well as unveiling the new state-of-the-art Los Altos Community Center. The proposed timeline came from extensive staff research on current staff resources, alignment with neighboring cities, and following county and state COVID guidance. The Council supported the recommendation, directing staff to move forward with the projected schedule as follows:
- Summer 2021: Completion of the Los Altos Community Center construction
- August 2021: Allow facility rentals for in-person gatherings
- October 2021: Grand Opening of the Los Altos Community Center and the return of in-person special events
“We are cautiously building back to a normal where our residents can enjoy the benefits of social and recreational offerings in a welcoming and comfortable setting,” said Donna Legge, Director of Recreation and Community Services. “Now staff can finally share everything we’ve had in store over the last year, including Los Altos’ brand-new Community Center.”
This summer the Recreation Department will provide in-person outdoor camps and classes, in addition to virtual options with plans to expand fall programming. The focus over the next few months will shift to training staff and supporting the management and operation of the new 24,500 square foot Community Center in preparation for its opening in the fall.
