Los Altos City Council Approves the Complete Streets Master Plan
Los Altos, Calif. — October 28, 2022 — The Los Altos City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night (Oct. 25) to approve the Complete Streets Master Plan (CSMP) that establishes a community-supported, long-term vision to design and operate city streets that prioritizes safety, comfort, and access to destinations for all modes of transportation in the city of Los Altos.
The CSMP incorporates a strategy that develops a comprehensive bicycling and walking network for community members to access transit, school, and downtown areas safely and conveniently, while balancing passenger and transit vehicle needs.
This plan includes support facilities like traffic calming devices at roadway crossings and bicycle parking and detection; educational programs like Safe Routes to School to help encourage students to walk or roll to school, and also recognizes the importance of safe and active transportation; and a strategy to evaluate and prioritize projects based on the goals established in the plan.
Throughout the development of the CSMP, city staff and the consultant team from Alta Planning + Design solicited feedback from City Council, the Complete Streets Commission, the Climate Action Planning Commission, and community members—receiving over 150 comments—to help shape the recommendations of the plan.
Notably, this plan will provide guidance for future transportation projects and programs that prioritize walking, biking, and rolling, for the City to create streets that are safer and more comfortable for all to enjoy.
