Biennial Street Slurry Seal
The Biennial Street Slurry Seal project will provide slurry seal treatment at various street segments throughout the city. The project may include cutout and repair of minor pavement failures and installation of striping as well, if needed. Slurry seal is the placement of a thin layer of sand and oil over existing street pavement. Slurry sealing is a preventative maintenance treatment that prevents water intrusion into the underlying base rock and soil, which can cause pavement deterioration.
Slurry seals have proven to be the best treatment for pavements in good condition based on life-cycle cost analysis because it extends the life of pavement for the least cost. Each application to streets in relatively good condition is expected to extend their useful life. Those streets selected for slurry sealing in any given year are chosen based on a City-wide ranking of the condition of all the streets that are maintained by the City. This process is done using the Pavement Management Program (PMP) developed by Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).
Community Impact
This project is anticipated to begin in July 2015 and be completed by August 2015. On the day work is performed, it may be necessary to temporarily close street segments to through traffic between 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except for El Monte Avenue and Miramonte Avenue where through traffic will be maintained and construction is limited to 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Temporary “NO PARKING” signs will be posted on barricades at least 48-hours in advance of when it is necessary to have the street cleared of all vehicles. Please also note that closures do not apply to emergency vehicles such as an ambulances or fire trucks.
A detailed schedule will be posted when it is available.
Questions about the project can be directed to the City of Los Altos Engineering Division at (650) 947-2780.
