Construction contract for the El Monte Sidewalk Gap Closure Project was awarded on November 10th, 2020 and will start mobilizing for construction in January 2021. Please expect construction activities impacting the roadway through June 2021. This project will install a new designated pedestrian pathway, buffered bicycle lanes, and striping and signage improvements on El Monte Ave from Almond Ave to S. Clark Ave. Additionally, a pedestrian-active flashing beacon will be installed at the Mills Ave intersection, and a new All-Way STOP will be implemented at the S. Clark Ave intersection. City staff engaged the public during the design process through community outreach meetings, including the presentation to the Complete Streets Commission. Final project plan is available at the bottom of this page in the "files" section.

May Update: The City observed many scratches and grinding marks from the striping removal and construction activities on El Monte Avenue. Following this, the City decided to apply microsurfacing, a thin protective coat for pavement preservation, on El Monte Avenue to provide a smooth final surface before the new stripings & pavement markings are installed. Microsurfacing will also increase the useful life of the pavement. Please expect all modes of travel through El Monte Avenue to be impacted during microsurfacing operation on May 14th 2021.

Once the microsurfacing material is laid down on the pavement, it will not be drivable for a several hours. If you plan to use your vehicle or drive out of your driveway facing El Monte Avenue, please park your car on an adjacent street prior to start of operation.
