Tree Protection Ordinance Update

On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, the City Council approved an update to the City’s Tree Protection Ordinance. As a part of the update the ordinance modifies the threshold of what is considered a protected tree in Los Altos, and requirements surrounding replacement trees for after a protected tree is removed.

The City Council affirmed its commitment to finding a pathway for property owners to remove dead, diseased, and invasive trees by creation of zero-cost tree removal permits which would be subject to verification of the Development Services Department prior to any removal. The new regulations go into effect on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

Residents are encouraged to engage the Development Services department prior to the removal of any tree they believe might be protected by the updated regulations. Please contact planning@losaltosca.gov or (650) 947-2750 for any questions.
