International Walk to School Day

We are celebrating International Walk to School Day during the month of October! Join the fun by walking or wheeling with your friends, family, and neighbors to school.

How it works

Schools can pick any day during the month of October to celebrate Walk & Wheel to School Day.

First register your event, and then use the Safe Routes to School Toolkit to plan a successful event. Schools that have signed up and that will send a picture of their event along with their participation numbers (counts of the students walking or wheeling the day-of) will enter a raffle to win prizes for their students.

6 Steps to Plan a Walk or Wheel Event at Your School

1. IDENTIFY A DATE during the month of October.

Schools can pick any date during the whole month of October to celebrate the International Walk to School Day.

2. RECRUIT community partners and volunteers to organize the Walk or Wheel to School Day.

Recruit school staff, parents, students and community members to assist with the logistics, the promotion and the counts during the event.

3. PLAN the event-day logistics.

You can establish meet-up points or Park and Walk locations for families. Collect or create event materials such as incentives and giveaways for students who walked or wheeled that day, sheets or posters to track the event participation, etc.

4. PROMOTE the event.

Register the school event on the city of Los Altos website, send electronic announcements to families, e.g. through the school newsletter, send fliers, post reminders on social media.

5. EVALUATE the event.

Track participation (counts and tallies) and collect pictures.

6. FOLLOW UP and thank all volunteers and partners after the event.

Share your pictures and participation numbers with the school community and the Los Altos Safe Routes to School Program (andreannecadieux@altago.com
