A Message of Unity from Mayor Jan Pepper, Police Chief Andy Galea, and City Manager Chris Jordan

Over the last week, individuals around the Bay Area, the United States, and the world have displayed justifiable outrage over the death of George Floyd. We send our sympathies to George Floyd's family; we cannot fathom the pain they are enduring and hope that justice is served swiftly. We also join our community in sharing your grief, frustration, and disappointment.

The City of Los Altos condemns the inexcusable actions of the four Minneapolis Police Officers and their excessive force that resulted in George Floyd's death. Los Altos is built on compassion and understanding; what we witnessed does not embody these values upheld by our City and Police Department. We do not teach, support, or condone this behavior and take pride in our Police Officers serving with humanity and respect. Los Altos Police Officers are trained to de-escalate situations for the safety of every individual involved. We will accept nothing less than the highest standards of excellence.

Unfortunately, the relationship between Police Officers and communities everywhere has been tainted, which will take time to repair. As we confront challenging times together, we will continue to learn how to police better. Collaboratively with local agencies, we are monitoring the current events to ensure the safety of our entire community.

We respect every individual's right to peacefully protest and acknowledge it is a vital component of our nation’s democracy. Sadly, the voices calling for reform are muffled by individuals choosing to loot and riot. To pacify the violence and chaos provoked by rioters, we urge our community to unite as one to respectfully honor the life and memory of every person whose life has been unjustly stolen away.

We stand alongside those who desire to make positive change. We will continue to foster an inclusive environment that recognizes the dignity and humanity of every person. Collectively our voices are powerful and will drive lasting change across the nation.
