Small Business Relief Fund
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Los Altos allocated $250,000 in initial funding for the Small Business Relief Fund program on April 28, 2020. City Council ratified program guidelines and the application at their May 12, 2020 meeting with direction to raise additional funds to provide grants to more businesses.
The program grants restaurant, retail, and personal service businesses with 1-25 employees a $5,000 grant to use on any business expenses. Additionally, these eligible businesses must operate out of a commercial storefront, pay sales tax to the City of Los Altos, and must demonstrate they have spent the funds within one month of receiving the grant.
City staff released the official program guidelines and application on May 18, 2020 with a press release, social media outreach, and an email to businesses with a retail, restaurant, or personal service business license. The Chamber of Commerce and Los Altos Community Foundation assisted with marketing and outreach efforts.
The application window was open for two weeks from May 26, 2020 at 8 am through June 9, 2020 at 5 pm. On June 9, 2020, City Council approved that City staff may proceed with the lottery to distribute funds to the eligible grantees. On June 15, 2020, the Small Business Relief Fund lottery was held virtually.
In total, the City of Los Altos received 85 applications with only 67 eligible applicants after reviewing their applications and verifying against the City of Los Altos Business License database.
As of now, the Los Altos Community Foundation has raised enough from the City of Los Altos, Town of Los Altos Hills, and private donations to fund all 67 grants. The City of Los Altos has distributed grants to those businesses.
